3 Creative Graphic Screen Print Placements

Hey guys I’m Summer from BELLA+CANVAS and we have another video for you from our decoration innovation series this video is all about print placement most people think about things like the type of ink the color the fabric of the garment but placement is something that often gets ignored choosing a unique placement for your logo or print is the way to make it stand out from all the other graphic tees out there and make it feel super high-end this especially works best when the garment itself has unique details so for today’s video we’ve chosen our woman’s prop place hoodie our zip up hoodies and our men’s pocket tee we’re gonna see what tom from Motion Textile can do with these three garments so what we’re talking about doing creative placements it’s really a good way to achieve somewhat of us cut and sew look so it looks very custom rather than just doing a logo on the left chest or on the front of a shirt we could be printing off the hem of the shirt we could be printing over a zipper or over a pocket it really has a great retail effect today we’re gonna be printing off the hem of the sponge fleece crop hoodie we’re using a soft Plastisol ink and it bleeds about 1/2 an inch off of the hem of the shirt for a real nice cut and so look the most important thing to achieve in any kind of a precision placement or printing off bleeding off the hem of a shirt is our laser positioning system we actually have all of our presses outfitted with lasers well the biggest consideration when we’re running a bleeding print in production is wet ink on the platen transferring on to the next garment that’s loaded down so we’ll generally either will actually wipe the ink which went from print to print or in certain cases will flash the ink so that it actually dries onto the platen or will use tape for every garment that’s loaded on we’ll actually tape the botton and then remove that piece of tape so on the crop lace hoodie it has a raw edge cut which is great because you don’t really have any seams to contend with at the bottom hem of the shirt but the problem is that the fabric wants to roll back up it was really really crucial we used a spray adhesive on each garment as it was printed and we just had to make sure that garment was completely flattened out onto the printing platen you need to budget for much longer production runs your run rate is going to slow down dramatically sometimes in half or more so something that the zipper a pocket of course really creates a great opportunity in the design process the design that we developed for the pocket tee really plays off the pocket itself so by creating it’s just a full front print broken out into two separations and with precision placing placement on press we were able to really create a nice custom effect with contrasting pocket considerations when printing over onto the surface of the pocket the number one consideration is that we want to actually spray attack the interior of the pocket so that it adheres to the base layer of fabric really really critical if we’re gonna hold registration additionally we try to limit pocket printing to one or two colors loose registration that makes it a little bit easier to deal with on press and what I really like is that the black contrasting pocket was able to discharge very well with a discharged white ink the tricky thing about about this print specifically was lining up the edge of the pocket to the white portion of the print again we use our laser positioning system for accurate placement it’s really something that’s beyond being difficult it’s really just time intensive so again in a production run we need to budget the time for the precision placement the third creative placement design that we’re gonna show you is something that people think is very difficult and can be challenging but it’s actually easier than you might think and that’s printing on top of a zipper if you don’t want to be limited to printing on one side of the zipper left chest or a right chest and you want to print that full front graphic on the front of the hoodie you have to print over the zipper the number one concern when printing over a zipper is the zipper actually affecting the integrity of the print so we mitigate this by printing on what we call a soft top platen that actually allows for the zipper to compress into the surface of a silicon topping on top of the platen because we’re not working with the kissing zipper it’s actually an exposed zipper we have to mask out the zipper itself because the ink is actually gonna print directly on to the zipper so we use a simple quarter inch painters tape and post-print the tape is removed so first and foremost is minimizing the number of colors in the graphic to be printed we used a soft plastisol ink we would always tend to want to use a soft plastisol or a water-based or discharge ink traditional plastisol inks tend to want to build up around the seams or you’ll have a thicker ink deposit which is not very appealing around the zipper these are just three ideas for graphic placements but the possibilities are really endless what sort of placements have you seen that are cool right now we’d love to hear your ideas in the comments below don’t forget to like this video and subscribe to our channel we’ll be back next week with yet another video on innovative
