Beowulf: Homeschool Literature with Joseph Pearce

Hello. I’m Joseph Pearce. I teach
literature for Homeschool Connections and I want to invite you to spend time
with monsters as we delve into the great Old English classic, the Old English
epic of Beowulf. Beowulf is one of the greatest works
of English literature. It’s also of course one of the earliest works of
English literature. It’s also a hugely influential work of literature not least
on the work of JRR Tolkien. It’s indeed possible that if it hadn’t been for Beowulf,
there would not be the Lord of the Rings. So really anybody who’s interested in these
modern epics such as Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings needs to understand where the
inspiration came from. And one of the major points of inspiration for Tolkien
was this wonderful epic. Tolkien wrote a long essay called The Monster and the
Critics about Beowulf. I want to delve into this story where
the hero Beowulf grapples with three monsters: Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and
the dragon. And we’ll see as we delve into this great Old English epic, how
Tolkien got his inspiration for The Hobbit and Smaug from this wonderful
work Beowulf. Please come with me as we grapple with monsters. [music]
