Rolex presents James Cameron on what makes a classic

I think it’s very important
for filmmakers that have been
around the block a couple times to give something back
to young filmmakers coming up. Because the medium
is constantly changing, but there’s certain things
that don’t change. There’s so many shiny bobbles
that we get to work with as tools, and you could start to lose touch
with the human heart. I think a lot of films, they want to be
very much of the moment, and that’s great
for the current conversation, but a film that’s a classic? It has to speak, first of all,
universally to people. So what do people care about? They care about family,
they care about love, they care about honour, and a sense of duty
and a sense of purpose. Then you can put something on the screen
that you can be proud of. It doesn’t mean that
an audience will show up; that’s a whole other factor. But at least you could be proud of
what you put up there on the screen because it will persist forever. Being afraid makes you better. It keeps you striving. That’s the perpetual part
that makes it scary. That’s the perpetual part
that in my mind drives you toward excellence.
