Well, this piece began from a visit that I made to various prisons throughout the country. And I had the experience of meeting a prisoner, Betsy Torres, who made artificial flowers in her free time as a passive way of entertaining herself in her daily life
there in the prison. And so this motivated me to do this piece
where I use these flowers, that are a very kitsch element
but of which the prisoners were not aware. And so what I wanted to do was decontextualise them
and incorporate them into a work of art beginning with the image of a woman
who is suffering, who is tormented, and these flowers shape and distort
this portrait of this woman, who could be Betsy
or any other of her fellow inmates. Well, Havana Club has given me the opportunity to do this piece thanks to the artistic scholarship programme and I’m very happy about this, of course.
