Theology, Modernity, & The Arts

Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts is an innovative, interdisciplinary venture based at Duke Divinity School. And it aims to show how Theology can reinvigorate the arts and how the arts can reinvigorate theology We want to form leaders will realize the arts have unique powers to unlock the gospel Since the beginning of Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts, we’ve had a project going with Cambridge University. A joint project between Duke and the UK And it culminated in a magnificent work by James MacMillan his “St. Luke Passion.” It arose out of many conversations, and scholars from Duke and Cambridge worked with him on that composition Having done that collaboration, we then asked what’s next? And what has emerged is a new research project called Theology, Modernity, & the Arts. What this is designed to do is ask what are the forces, the movements, the ideas that have made us what we are? And how can we understand those forces from a Christian perspective? Which will lead to a large conference and some major performance events as well We’ve been working with a poet, Micheal O’Siahail, and he is writing a very large poetic work on Precisely these issues. In Easter 2015 Micheal O’Siadhail read this poetry for some of it in public, and we had the poetry interspersed with music that I’d written performed by Cordelia Williams. And that was a public event, and it reminded me again of the very important ways in which different art forms intersect. We’re trying to ignite a movement we want to form leaders of the future who will see faith and art as intertwined inseparable
