Why today’s students need literature

Students need to read literature because it
is the greatest art that’s been produced by the human race. It’s not the only art. But without literature they’re never going
to understand or it’s going to be much more difficult to understand the human condition,
where your place is in this world, that everybody has great expectations like Pip, that all
of us are on a journey to self-discovery like Odysseus. And classic literature is difficult. So, if we stop teaching it, it will not be
read. Now, I get it that in many cases we teach
great literature to students too early. You know, I mean I had that experience myself
in some cases in school. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it. You’re sowing seeds that will later allow
a student to come back and read that work as an adult. And it opens up – it breaks down some barriers
for students. And shoot, I’ve read War and Peace three
times. You don’t just read great literature once. And every time you read it, it comes to you
in a different way. Stephen Greenblatt has said that literature
is the greatest technology the human race has invented for reproducing experience. And that’s what I believe too.
